Beirut19 Writing Competition

The Beirut19 project offered the opportunity for young Arabs who reside in Qatar to participate in a writing competition involving Arab youth from 11 countries. The Beirut19 philosophy was inspired by Beirut39 which aims to encourage debating of important issues between young Arab writers, as well as to allow them to share and cultivate their writing talents.

70 students from 18 different schools and universities in Qatar submitted writings in Arabic or English on two themes:

  • Power and Identity in the 21st Century
  • Arab Culture in a Globalized World

ROTA sponsored a trip for the top four writers from Qatar, along with the top two from Yemen to attend the Beirut39 festival and events from the 14th to 18th of April 2010. The last day of the trip started with an exciting debate between three of the young writers and two of the adult writers: Yehya Umkassem from Saudi Arabia and Hamdy Al Gazzar from Egypt.
